Vic: No confirmation on new prisons, Bracks
Premier STEVE BRACKS says the construction of two new prisons in Victoria is one option
the state government is considering as part of its corrective services master plan.
But Mr BRACKS wouldn't confirm a report in today's Herald Sun newspaper that two new
jails would be built to house some of the state's most violent criminals.
The report says a 600-bed, maximum security remand centre and a 300-bed, medium security
jail would be built to house the state's growing prison population.
The report also says a plan for 300 beds in high security, relocatable facilities are
expected to be announced in the state Budget.
Mr BRACKS has told ABC Radio the Herald Sun is correct in saying more prison beds are
needed in the state.
He says the newspaper reported on one of the options the government is considering
in preparation for the state budget, which is part of a wider strategy.
He says the strategy also includes home detention proposals that will be introduced
by legislation next week.
Mr BRACKS says any prisons built in Victoria under his government would be publicly
run and operated.
